New to spearfishing and want to learn? Spearfished before and want to improve your skills? We offer the following three types of spearfishing courses;
1. Introduction to Spearfishing
A basic course providing you with basic information on spearfishing theory, to include equipment, safety, freediving skills and hunting techniques, followed by a confined water session to put into practice the theory, followed by an afternoon spearfishing session in open water. This course includes an experienced spearfishing guide/instructor, materials, and equipment. The course is ideal for those with limited time who can't commit to the Level 1 course but still want to get a taste for spearfishing. Duration - 1 Day.
2. Spearfishing Level 1
This course starts by addressing one of the most important aspects of spearfishing; your need to be able to hold your breath and freedive. The course includes the SSI Level 1 freediving course, which runs over the first two days and covers freediving theory and skills covered in a classroom, confined water and open water. The third day of the course covers the same materials as the Introduction to Spearfishing course. This course includes an experienced spearfishing guide/instructor, materials, and equipment. Successfully completing the SSI Level 1 freediving component will include a certificate being issued to the participant. Duration - 3 Days
3. Spearfishing Level 2
Having completed the Level 1 course and wanting to progress further, this course includes the SSI Level 2 freediving course for advanced freediving skills coupled with advanced spearfishing theory and techniques. The freediving component is run over three days and covers theory on advanced freediving theory and skills. It is then followed by a one day advanced spearfishing theory and skills session, as well as an afternoon out spearfishing in open water to put to the test all that was learnt during the course. Successfully completing the SSI Level 2 freediving component will include a certificate being issued to the participant. Duration - 4 Days.
Package trips to include additional spearfishing days are available on request. Please Contact Us for more information on our amazing spearfishing courses and packaged trips.
For any spearo to be successful at this special sport, you need to know how to freedive. Completing one or more freediving courses will not only increase your natural ability to hold your breath while submerged in water, it will enhance any previous freediving skills you have achieved to this point and help improve your success rate while spearfishing. Located in Zanzibar under the brand name Extreme Blue Water Freediving, we operate the only freediving centre in East Africa. Our centre, with locations in Stone Town and Nungwi, is an official SSI Freediving Centre. Through our SSI Freediving Instructors we offer the following courses out of Zanzibar;
1. SSI Level 1 Freediving
This course is the first step to learning safe freediving (and spearfishing for those who want to progress into that sport) and the basic techniques of breath-holding, relaxation, correct breathing, streamlining, proper finning and posture under water. The course is run over two days that include theory, confined water and open water sessions with the objective of ensuring that by the end of the course you are able to freedive to below 10 metres. Successful completion of the course will be rewarded with SSI certification. Duration - 2 Days.
2. SSI Level 2 Freediving
Freediving SSI level 2 teaches you more advanced techniques that will allow you to reach deeper depths in a comfortable and safe way. Techniques such as free-falling and more efficient equalization methods will save a lot of energy so you can dive deeper while using less oxygen. You will also be taught how to train efficiently on your own and in the absence of access to deep water. The course is run over three days and includes theory, static sessions, confined and open water sessions that by the end of it should successfully have you freediving to 20 meters or more. Successful completion of the course will be rewarded with SSI certification. Duration - 3 Days.
3. SSI Level 3 Freediving
Freediving SSI level 3 is a very advanced course recommended for who are already freediving to 30 or more meters and have trouble equalizing past this depth. In this course you will learn the “Mouthfill” technique and exhale diving which are the key for deep freediving. We also teach you how to coach your buddy during static apnea training and how to plan training sessions efficiently. We will cover mental aspects of freediving and practice more advanced lung stretching techniques and by the end of it, the course aims to have you comfortably freediving below 30 meters. Duration - 4 Days.
For those with time constraints or unsure whether they want to take a full course, we also offer a Half Day Freediving Intro and One Day Freediving courses. We also offer freediving training and breathing for freediving classes. Please Contact Us for more information on freediving packages in Zanzibar or visit our Extreme Blue Water Freediving website directly.
Wildlife Safaris and Other Excursions
Trips to Tanzania, Madagascar, and Mozambique offer a myriad of activities that are unique to this part of the world and found no where else. The most iconic of all would be to embark on a journey of sorts, a luxurious wildlife safari far into the African interior, where Lions are King and rule over spectacular landscapes of savannah grasslands, bushland, mountain forests, and seemingly uninhabited deserts that teem with other wildlife.
But don't be fooled, there is so much much more to see here and the best we can do in a few paragraphs is highlight a fraction of what East and Southern Africa has to offer. Walk the Serengeti Plains among Lions and Buffalo; ride a horse in the among Zebra, Giraffe, and Oryx in the Okavango Delta or Namib Desert; soar in a hot air balloon over above the world's biggest mammal migration in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve; white water raft the mighty Zambezi River; hike to the top of Kilimanjaro, the world's tallest free standing mountain; get in the water with Seals or Great White Sharks along South Africa's magnificent coastline; hike through the jungles in search of the endemic Lemurs of Madagascar.
