Cape Town

South Africa

South Africa is known as the 'Rainbow Nation' for it's diversity of people and colours of it's landscapes.  Being the southern most country in Africa, it boasts coastlines from two oceans; the Indian Ocean along it's east coast and the Atlantic Ocean along it's western coast.  Around the southern tip of South Africa, where the two oceans converge, lies a very productive fishing ground.  Large schools of Yellowfin, Longfin, and Big Eye Tuna are found there, along with Marlin, Yellowtail, the occasional Wahoo, and some lesser reef species.

We concentrate on the plentiful Tuna and Yellowtail Kingfish the area is famous for, and organise spearfishing charters, with our own boat, out of the Cape Town and Cape Aghulas areas in the Western Cape.  Day trips for Tuna set off from Miller's Point,  a little south-east of Cape Town, and head to the deep canyons off Cape Point to hunt the large Yellowfin and Big Eye Tuna found there.  Longfin Tuna are also plentiful in the area.  Trips for Yellowtail depart from Struisbaai and head to nearly reefs or, if weather permits, as far 40 nm offshore.

As weather off the Western Cape region of South Africa can be very unpredictable, it is generally a good idea to plan for several days when heading there so as to allow for down time due to bad weather.  Turns out down days due to bad weather are wonderful day spent exploring and discovering this amazing region.  With highlights such as hiking up iconic Table Mountain, visiting Robben Island, heading for a dive with White Sharks, swimming with Seals, or sipping some of the best wine in the world at one of Cape Town's oldest vineyards, down days can't really be called as such.
Places of Interest

Cape of Good Hope

Off the beautiful Cape peninsula lie some deep water canyons that, at certain times of the year, teem with large Yellowfin, Longfin, and Big Eye Tuna.  The canyons lie some 40 nm offshore and are fishing grounds for commercial vessels trawling for Hake.  It is the commercial fishing and the feeding potential resulting from the trawling that attracts the Tuna to this area.

Trips depart from quaint Simons Town, some 45 km out of Cape Town and overlooking False Bay.  Beautiful views of the Cape Peninsula and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve characterise the boat ride for part of the way out to the fishing grounds.  During the Tuna seasons, it is not uncommon to find record size Longfin Tuna and Big Eye and Yellowfin Tuna in excess of 80 kgs in weight.

Cape Aghulas

Cape Aghulas is a little town on the southern most point of Africa.  It is where the Indian and Atlantic Ocean meet and a sight to behold.  The weather in the area can at times be very poor, so it is imperative to plan well and allow for multiple days and flexibility to ensure a day or more out on the water.  The boat departs from nearby Struisbaai.

There are several nearby wrecks and nearby reefs, lying anywhere between 5 nm and 12 nm offshore, that are good for spearfishing Cape Yellowtail, the main target species in the area.  Alphard Bank, a beautiful shallow water system lying some 45 nm offshore, is the top spearfishing location in the area when weather allows for such a long run.  The southern-most point of Africa is a spectacularly beautiful area and well worth a visit even if you are not going spearfishing.

Day Trips
Due to unpredictable weather patters that are characteristic of the Western Cape area of South Africa, we only operate day trips out at this destination.  Day trips for Yellowfin and other Tuna off the magical Cape of Good Hope and into the offshore canyons set off from Simons Town.  The run to the canyons is approximately 40 nm and the scenery along the way past the Cape is stunning.  The canyons teem with Yellowfin Tuna of up to over 100 kgs in weight, world record size Longfin Tuna, and world record size Big Eye Tuna.  Chum is used to draw the fish up close to the surface.  All trips are limited to small groups of up to 4 persons.

On the other hand, trips from Struisbaai on the southern most point of Africa target Cape Yellowtail as the main fish.  Occasional Marlin are also sighted in the area.  Spearfishing locations vary in distance from 3 nm - 10 nm for the inshore reefs and wrecks and will run up to 40 nm for the Alphard Bank.  Chum is not used on these trips, especially inshore where it is possible to sight the majestic Great White Shark.  This is a very special part of the world and very much worth the visit and day out spearfishing.  Contact Us for more information on day trips out of Cape Town and Struisbaai.
