As the world continued to lock down due to the Corona Virus pandemic, in March we headed to Latham Island with for the last trip of the season. Most thought of us as crazy for choosing to do what we did amidst the chaos unfolding around us. But for those of us who were on the trip, it was a welcome getaway from the media news and fast unfolding developments, and being in Zanzibar and out at sea we understood we would be well away from the pandemic.
In the end it was a good decision to go. Our guests had a wonderful time, blessed with flat warm seas and crystal clear waters characteristic of legendary Latham Island. Nights on the live aboard yacht were comfortable due to the calm seas and the days were spectacular. Despite searching for them on every day, the giant Dogtooth Tuna were no where to be seen. However, our clients landed one decent Dogtooth during the trip. They also had the opportunity to hunt species they hadn't hunted before, Dorado, which were plentiful around a massive seaweed patch floating in the current. We landed Wahoo and Yellowfin Tuna, Emperors and Green Jobfish, Dogtooth and Trevally, but the most impressive opportunities came when two massive Marlin, one on each of two days of the trip, made sudden appearances to the flasher and live bait floating with us in the current. The first turned and disappeared almost as fast as it had appeared and gave our client no chance for a good shot. The second, a fish estimated at well over 200 kgs in weight, did an extra turn of the flasher and our client took a slightly rushed shot, hitting it in the back. The shot was not good and the fish stayed on for approximately 30 minutes before it broke off and swam away. Real shame for all but nonetheless an amazing experience that Latham Island never seems to cease to offer.
